Emily Dickinson: Person, Poetry, and Place
Housing and Meals
Housing (Session I only)
Summer Scholars in session I will be housed in Mayo-Smith House on the Amherst College campus. The dormitory, which offers single and double rooms with shared baths, will be used exclusively by NEH Summer Scholars. The dormitory is handicapped-accessible.
The dorm is located 1/2 mile or less to all locations associated with the Workshop. Participants should expect to walk from the dorm to Workshop activities unless special arrangements are made in advance with the project director.
Basic linens (sheets, pillow and pillowcase, blanket, and towels) are provided.
Session I: Breakfast and lunch are included in the dormitory room and board plan and will be served in Valentine Dining Hall, the main dining center at Amherst College. Valentine Hall has a food court that serves an exceptional variety of hot and cold foods throughout the week. Other than Sunday dinner, NEH Summer Scholars will be on their own for dinner; numerous dining options for all price levels await in the town of Amherst. Several convenience stores in walking distance have grocery sections.
Session II: Participants in session II will enjoy lunch with their fellow summer scholars and workshop faculty in Valentine Dining Hall, the main dining center at Amherst College. Valentine Hall has a food court that serves an exceptional variety of hot and cold foods throughout the week.
Housing and Meal Costs
NEH Summer Scholars in both sessions will be expected to arrive on Sunday and depart on Friday afternoon after 2:30 p.m.
Session I: Payment for on-campus room and board will be taken directly from your stipend. The cost per day of room and board is $60.
Session II: Payment for the lunch plan and the Sunday dinner will be taken directly from your stipend and the cost of lunch is $12 per day.
Off-campus Housing during session I
NEH Summer Scholars in Session I are strongly encouraged to stay on campus as a way to foster community. However, for those NEH Summer Scholars who do not wish to stay on campus, several motels and hotels are located in Amherst and the nearby town of Hadley, within 3-5 miles of campus. Costs will range from $125-200/night. Visit the Chamber of Commerce or Hampshire County Regional Tourism Council for complete lists of options. NEH Summer Scholars staying off campus will be responsible for paying for that housing on their own (it will not be automatically deducted from the stipend) and for daily transportation to and from workshop activities. Scholars staying off campus will be provided a lunch-only meal plan at Valentine.
NEH Summer Scholars are encouraged to consider the Workshop experience as a time for professional and personal development. If you plan to bring family members with you, please understand that they may not participate in formal Workshop activities. Those who bring family members will be responsible for their own living arrangements during the Workshop. See the section above about "off-campus housing" for more information.
For NEH Summer Scholars who bring cars to campus, parking will be provided. Unless you have mobility issues, you should not need a car once you arrive in Amherst.
