Volunteer

Volunteers at the Emily Dickinson Museum fulfill a vital role in helping us to preserve and share Emily Dickinson’s poetic legacy. They contribute expertise and enthusiasm, helping our programs to run smoothly, assisting visitors with crafts and activities, weeding the Dickinson gardens, and putting the essential pieces and finishing touches on special events.

The Emily Dickinson Museum typically supports volunteers May through December, when most Museum programs and events take place.

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Garden volunteers: The Dickinson family gardens were extensive and rambling! Join in a community of helpers throughout the warm season by contributing a few hours to weeding, planting, and maintaining the landscapes at the Homestead and The Evergreens. Learn about the current garden volunteer opportunities!
  • Program volunteers: Many hands make light work for programs such as the annual Tell It Slant Poetry Festival and Emily Dickinson Poetry Marathon in the fall, the Poetry Walk in May, and the December celebration of Dickinson’s birth. Give a few hours to work “backstage” on various administrative tasks, prepare craft activities for children new to poetry, serve as an usher, or help with event set up and breakdown.
