Decor and dishes in the dining room showed off Sue and Austin’s sophisticated taste. The origins of this Japanese-style screen are unknown but its presence in this room may have sparked dinner-time conversations about the family’s international connections. Through Amherst College, the Dickinsons were acquainted with missionary alumni who traveled to countries across the Middle East and Asia, and professors who frequently augmented their studies in Europe. Eventually, Susan traveled to Europe herself with her daughter, but not until after Austin’s death in 1895.
