This room displays the worn floorboards and crumbling plaster original to an older cottage that Edward instructed the builders to incorporate into The Evergreens when it was built in 1855. The kitchen, used exclusively by the family and domestic workers, contrasts with the elaborate finishes of more public spaces. This space is made functional by work tables, call bells, a large cast iron stove, an icebox, two smaller utility rooms for storage and washing, and a pass-through window into the dining room through which the next course could be presented for serving.
